Your 2026 Guide to Renting a Boat at Chidorigafuchi Park
I took Mama Chen to Japan in 2019, and one of our favorite activities was rowing a boat down the Chidorigafuchi Moat amidst cherry blossom petals.
But! Before you make any travel plans, you first need to determine the right time to book your trip.
When do cherry blossoms bloom in Tokyo?
Somei yoshino cherry blossoms typically bloom from late March to early April, and the best viewing time is four to seven days after the start of peak bloom.
Due to weather, however, forecasts can vary from year to year.
I like following Weathernews ウェザーニュース (Japanese only) and Japan Meteorological Corporation 日本気象株式会社 (JMC; English available), which releases forecasts every week.
Update March 5th, 2026: Cherry blossoms are expected to start flowering on March 19th in Tokyo and reach full bloom on March 28th.
For reference, we rented a boat on April 5th, 2019.
Peak bloom was forecasted to be on March 22nd and I was panicking that we’d miss the blooms. Luckily, it ended up being a colder year, and we saw what we came to see.
Again, weather is hard to predict. Keep that in mind and remember to manage your expectations.
Getting to Chidorigafuchi Park
Chidorigafuchi Park is a long and narrow park that runs along one of the 12 moats around Imperial Palace.
The fastest and easiest way to locate the pier is to key in “Chidorigafuchi Boat Pier” on Google Maps.
The closest subway station is Kudanshita Station, which is a short 5 to 10-minute walk away.
Tip: Japan’s public transportation system is extremely affordable and convenient. I highly recommend that you take the subway (or bus) instead of taxis.
Chidorigafuchi Park Boat Rental Process
March to April is peak season in Japan.
Not only are tourists flying in from all over the world, but locals are also out and about enjoying this beautiful time of the year.
If you don’t want to wait in line, go early!!!!! (Queues can literally start as early as 8:00 AM.)
Chidorigafuchi Boat Rental Hours
During cherry blossom season, boat rentals run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily*.
We arrived sometime between 11:10 AM to 11:15 AM, and waited in line for exactly 45 minutes to get a boat. (I’ve heard that afternoons are even busier, so plan accordingly.)
*When we went in 2019, boats operated until 8:00 PM. I believe the hours have shortened to accommodate the park’s night illumination program.
Chidorigafuchi Boat Rental Price
Each boat fits up to three people, and 2026’s latest pricing for a single boat is
- 1,500 yen (~$10 USD/$13 CAD) for half an hour
- 3,000 yen (~$19 USD/$26 CAD) for one hour
Once you pay, you get a ticket indicating what time you should return your boat.
If you would like to rent the boat for longer, you can simply return it whenever you’d like and pay the difference afterwards.
Tip: You can now reserve boats in advance. The price is 12,000 yen (~$76 USD/$103 CAD) for one boat for one hour. It’s a steeper price, yes, but you’re guaranteed a boat—and time is money!
What to Expect
I’ve been told I don’t look sporty, but I can kayak. And I’m pretty darn good at it!!!
But trust me when I say… rowing a boat isn’t as easy as it looks.
Unlike a paddle that you can simply pick up and start using, the oars are secured in oarlocks on both sides of the boat, making them difficult to maneuver.
It definitely takes some time to get used to, and I spent the first couple of minutes struggling to get out of the dock. (Yup, it was pretty embarrassing.)
Another thing to note is that while the moat itself spans across several meters in length, it’s common to see people crowded around the same trees for pictures.
Be careful not to bump into other boats and exercise caution.

We visited quite a few of the parks in Tokyo but not this one and it looks so idyllic especially during the spring season with the blossoms. We’re hoping to go back to Japan next year or so and this is on our list for sure. Beautiful photos.
