Best Time to See Mount Fuji & What Months to Avoid

I’m sure you’ve probably seen social media posts captioned, “Mount Fuji is only visible around 70-80 days a year.” Well, that’s completely true!

Weather plays a significant role in your chances of enjoying an unobstructed view. If seeing Japan’s iconic snow-capped peak is on your bucket list, timing your visit makes all the difference!

Mount Fuji Visibility

While it often comes down to luck, December to February are the best months to see Mt. Fuji.

This is when the air is cold and dry with fewer clouds. Plus, the frosted crown makes the scene even more spectacular.

Actual Best Time to View Mount Fuji

Early mornings between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM are usually your best bet.

Air tends to cool and stabilize overnight, which reduces haze and atmospheric distortion in the morning. As the day warms, rising air currents cause clouds to develop. Early mornings beat that daily cycle. Plus, crowds are thin at those hours as well, so that’s always a bonus.

When I’ve Seen Mount Fuji Outside the Recommended Times

For reference, I’ve visited during spring between April to late May, and still witnessed Mount Fuji’s beauty even outside “ideal” conditions.

Here are the exact dates and times of the photos above, in order:

  • May 20, 2017 at 9:02 AM (Fuji Shibazakura Festival)
  • May 21, 2017 at 6:21 PM (Chureito Pagoda)
  • April 14, 2024 at 4:31 PM (Lawson)
  • April 15, 2024 at 9:45 AM (Lake Yamanaka)
  • April 15, 2024 at 10:14 AM (THE PARK)
  • April 16, 2024 at 9:20 AM (Cafe mimi)
  • April 17, 2024 at 5:28 AM (Kawaguchiko Station)

Spring, in general, is my favorite season to visit Japan. It lets you experience both cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji in one trip. And as you can see, I spotted Fuji-san every day for four days straight in 2024. Visibility can remain strong well into March, April, and even May.

I’ve yet to go leaf peeping around the area in the fall. Will report back if I get the chance, along with updates on the best time of year to see Mt Fuji.

Worst Months to Avoid

While summer is the best time to hike Mt. Fuji—the only time you can safely hike it, in fact—July and August are terrible when it comes to seeing this iconic peak from afar. This is because Japan’s summers are extremely humid. Moist air creates haze, thereby reducing visibility of Mount Fuji.

Warmer temperatures also cause convection, which can form clouds. Oh! Let’s not forget that the rainy season (tsuyu) runs from early June to mid-July.

Haze, clouds, rain… there are simply more factors to hinder your chances. But to quote JB, “never say never.” Although rare, there are exceptions, and again, it depends on your luck.

Mount Fuji Weather Forecast

Once you’ve figured out when to visit, it’s worth keeping an eye on weather conditions.

The most reliable way to monitor the Mt. Fuji view forecast is by visiting fuji-san.info. It shows weekly conditions, including a visibility index with 10 being the strongest and 1 being the weakest.

The chart literally does all the heavy lifting for you. I can’t believe I’d only found out about it in 2024. Before that, I was guessing blindly and hoping for the best. I’ve used it religiously since then and found it accurate 10/10 times.

Other Mount Fuji Tips

If your schedule allows, I recommend staying overnight to maximize your chances. Two days are always better than one. The math is simple.

FUFU Kawaguchiko is my top pick for Mount Fuji hotels. Every room faces Fuji-san and has a private onsen tub. Breakfast and dinner are included too. It’s basically the kinda place where you can just chill and do absolutely nothing but relax all day.
