You Had Me at Aloha ❥ Turtle Bay Resort [Review]

Turtle Bay Resort

Back in May, I took my mom to Oʻahu as a happy mother’s day gift as well as to celebrate my birthday in advance. We stayed at Turtle Bay Resort up at North Shore and it was quite the magical stay. I know that this is such a long overdue post but I’d been busy migrating the site from Blogger to WordPress. A lot of things are still not how I like them so I apologize in advance for any awkward site transitions. Without further ado, let’s jump right into the review!

Pros:
– Plenty of activities to choose from, you’ll never get bored

– The area is known for turtle watching and there are excellent waves for surfing
– Weekly luau on Sunday nights (Hawaiin party/feast with hula dance performances)

Cons:
– At least an hour drive away from Honolulu Airport (hotel does offer car rental and shuttle services)
– Very far from Honolulu main attraction area
– Resort charges service fees of close to $40/night

Getting to the Resort
From Honolulu International Airport, we took an Uber up to North Shore to Turtle Bay Resort. We tipped the driver extra too since it was such a long ride and Uber drivers rarely go up that far. That said, going back to the airport we either had to take the resort shuttle, which was about $151.83 for two passengers, or what we did was rent a car with Enterprise for I can’t remember how much, but at most $60-70, less than the shuttle for sure. It was just a basic Toyota Corolla and we used this chance to explore Honolulu as well.

Horseback Riding
At Turtle Bay Resort, you can spend your time riding through scenic trails where several famous movies have been filmed at. Click to read more!

Weekly Luau
As mentioned above, the resort puts on a traditional Hawaiian feast every Sunday night and features Polynesian dancers in their beautiful straw skirts as well as courageous warriors of the fire dance.

Even though a luau is supposed to be a “feast”, you still have to order your own food and drinks at The Point Sunset & Pool Bar. Be sure to make your way down to the bar early if you want to get a seat and have food ready by the time the performance starts. We took an afternoon nap and overslept so we made it 10 minutes before the show started and the place was packed! We had to sit on the very side on the grass since there were no more seats left. The view wasn’t fantastic but definitely a special experience nonetheless. Do not miss it!

Overall a fabulous stay. Very laid back and relaxing and my mom absolutely loved it. It is quite different than staying at a hotel in the Honolulu area. There’s no shopping, there’s less tourist distraction, you’re in a more secluded area, and you really do just learn to appreciate mother nature. Every day you wake up to the sound of the rolling waves and the smell of seawater. Obviously it is still a resort so it’s not 100% organic but compared to the busy Waikiki, it’s just a different kind of oasis. Mahalo O’ahu.

    1. Bahahhaaa thanks Claudia!! And me tooooooo omg once was not enough for me, especially there are so many other islands to explore!

    1. Hi Agness, apologies for the delayed response… The length of your stay would depend on what kind of a traveler you are. My mom and I both came here with the sole purpose of relaxing hence we stayed here for a weekend and did nothing but stay within the resort grounds just sunbathing, horseback riding, etc. There’s also quite a lot to do around the area too so I’d definitely recommend 2-3 nights at least. But of course, if you’re more of an avid explorer and want to see more of the rest of the island within a short period of time then by all means a night or two would suffice as well.

    1. Thanks Paula! I haven’t been to the Big Island yet but I’ve seen photos and it looks amazing. We both need to revisit Hawaii sometime soon 😉

  3. I have always wanted to visit Hawaii, but it’s hard to decide to hit the touristy areas my first time or go out all authentic. Your post nudged me a little closer to authentic. Such beautiful photos, another lovely post!
