One of the things I miss the most about studying in France is freshly baked croissants.

Now butter is a key ingredient in creating the perfect flakey texture. We all know that European butter tastes different (and is obviously superior, duh). While butter in America simply cannot compare, Le Marais’ croissants are the closest I’ve ever come to being teleported back to L’hexagone.

The location I went to was near Mission Dolores Park. They also have a second one at 1138 Sutter Street that is closer to Union Square.

This bistro-café is a local favorite in the Cow Hollow neighborhood.

Not only do they serve delicious Italian fare made from organic local produce, fresh seafood, humanely raised meats, and free-range poultry, it’s a fantastic weekend hangout spot for people watching.

I went in November 2022 and their menu has changed a little since. You won’t see the pasta dish in the video, but their Smoked Salmon Pizza with Crème Fraîche & Scrambled Eggs (pictured above) is absolutely to die for!

3. Son & Garden

Address: 700 Polk Street, San Francisco, California, United States
Phone Number: (415) 913-7404
Hours: Breakfast served daily from 9:00AM to 3:00PM

If you’re unfamiliar with San Francisco, Tenderloin is a (sketchy) area in Downtown that you’ll generally want to avoid.

Son & Garden, along with many other top-rated restaurants in the city, are unfortunately all located in this neighborhood.

I tried coming here in March of 2022 and I cannot describe to you how anxious I felt walking down these streets even during broad daylight. (The queue for a table was also over an hour. My friend and I left because we didn’t feel comfortable waiting outside.)

Fast forward a couple months later in November, I revisited Son & Garden’s Secret Bar next door and I do have to say that the environment has improved drastically. (I took a picture at their IG-famous “Hello Gorgeous” wall, but still haven’t had a chance to try their best brunch in SF.)

All in all, this whimsical restaurant is very much still worth a visit. I most certainly will be back to try their My Son burger one day. Just be extra cautious and stay alert!

Established in 1999, this Californian-Mediterranean brunch restaurant is known for its outdoor cinematic courtyard.

It combines food, wine, and cocktails with film and art in one harmonious ambiance. Truly a delightful experience and worthy of the San Francisco Chronicle “Top 100 Restaurant” title for 18 consecutive years.

8. Tartine Manufactory

Address: 595 Alabama Street, San Francisco, California, United States
Phone Number: (415) 757-0007
Hours: Open daily from 8:00AM to 4:00PM
Menu: https://tartinebakery.com/

Behind Tartine’s rustic, elegant pastries is a heart-warming story.

Owners Elisabeth and Chad owned a bakery in Point Reyes. On a San Francisco trip in 2002, they met a baker who was ready to retire, but did not want the neighborhood to lose its corner bakery. Tartine was born out of a fated meeting, and the couple continues to bring loaf (love; excuse the bad pun) to sunny California.

If you don’t have time for a sit-down meal, opt to grab pastries at Tartine Bakery instead. Everything is baked using a wood fired brick oven!

With pancakes and lattes as aesthetic as this, it’s no wonder they’ve been been voted as the most Instagrammabed breakfast spot in San Francisco.
